LVSD Receives Kickstarting Grant
Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is excited to announce that 10 schools in the Pittsburgh region have been selected to participate in the pilot stage of the Kickstarting Making in Schools project. The initiative explores ways schools can integrate maker learning, often characterized by hands-on tinkering and building with old and new technologies, into their curriculums.
The 10 schools are:
●Burgettstown Elementary Center
●Cecil Intermediate School
●Environmental Charter School
●Falk Laboratory School
●Kiski Area Upper Elementary School
●Ligonier Valley High School
●Monesson Elementary Center
●Pittsburgh Public Schools-Lincoln PK5
●Woodland Hills Intermediate Center
●Yeshiva Schools, 1 - 12
Through an educational partnership between the Museum and Kickstarter, the online funding platform, the schools will use the platform to raise funds for their projects, launching campaigns in mid-September. Educators will design and implement various projects during the 2015-2016 school year, in topics such as applied mathematics, energy, literacy, and entrepreneurship.
"We're excited to be a part of the Kickstarting Making program and its new approach to helping schools develop making experiences that fit their needs and their communities," says Jane Werner, Executive Director of Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.
The schools will also be featured at Maker Faire Pittsburgh, which will take place on October 10 and 11 on the North Side.
"We are ecstatic to work with the Children's Museum on the Kickstarter Project. It will give us the opportunity to transform our culture of learning by making instruction hands-on and open-ended,” says Mandi Figlioli, Assistant to the Superintendentof Burgettstown Area School District. “We are excited to form partnerships with the museum, neighboring districts, and our community. This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime."
Kickstarting Making in Schools is made possible by the Grable Foundation.
